月球开始偏离轨道，离撞上地球的时间线越来越近，危机时刻，美国国防部提出使用核弹，来让月球重新回到正常轨道。但“假冒博士”（约翰·布莱德利饰）发现，月球内部是空的，显然是有外星文明在操控着月球的轨迹。这个计划逐渐被两位宇航员（帕特里克·威尔森和哈莉·贝瑞饰）接受，但前者因为多年前的一起太空事故，已被美国国家航空航天局开除，关键时刻，已经升为负责人的后者拍板，决定用一台被废弃在博物馆中的航天飞船再次升空飞往月球，借助前者超强的驾驶经验，深入月球地心完成任务。
